| AKDAMAR ISLAND |
| The earliest monuments of the
Christian period in the region lies in the South of lake
Van,about 4 km from the shore at a point 5 km or sof rom
Gevaş-that is,the church on Akdamar Island.A dramatic story
whicih has become a local legend has been in existence ever
since the 19th century;it is said that a nobleman who lived on
the shore fell in love with a young girl named Tamar;the girl
lived on the island and every night the nobleman would swim over
to island to see her. |
|
| One night,when the
young man had set on his nocturnal journey, a storm broke out and he
was overwhelmed by the waves. Crying,’’Ah Tamar!’’ at the top of his
voice,he struggled to remain on the surface but, alas, was drowned.
The young girl watched helplessly from the island and shortly
afterwards she died of grief. Thus, so it is said, from that day
forth the island was known as Ahtamar(Akdamar). At one end of this
island a sheer cliff rises out of the turguoise waters of the lake.
The north slope of this headland inclines steeply and then levels
out. This level area is the place that extended a warm welkome to a
small city, a palace and its church. All that survives today is the
is the magnificent church. Akdamar Church was built as a royal
church in 915-922 A.D by King Gagik I of Vaspurakan. Its architect
was a monk named Manuel but the king himself took part in the
planning of both the church and the palace next to it. The church
was dedicated to the Holy Cross on which jesus Christ was
crucifted. The Stones reflects the changing guality of light
according to the season and hte time of day with shades of red,
yellow and grey. The sculpture adorning the facades make its
colourful mas even more striking with their play of light and
shade. The church was turned into a monasery church at an unknown
time, in all probability when the palace ceased to exist, and a
cluster of buildings grew up around it. In photographs taken et the
turn of the centry the existence of guite large, two-storeyed
monastery buildings is obvious. The walls and foundations of some of
these buildings are stil in existence. |
